Winter Car Care in Renfrewshire: How to Protect Your Paint from Road Salt

Every winter, cars come into my Paisley workshop with the same problems: dull paint, swirl marks, grime baked onto the lower panels and wheels caked in brake dust. Most of that damage happens between November and March, and most of it can be avoided.

After nearly 20 years of detailing cars in the west of Scotland, here's what I tell customers about getting through winter with their paint intact.

Why Winter Is So Hard on Your Paint

It's not the cold that does the damage. It's what's on the roads.

  • Road salt and grit. Once the gritters are out on the M8 and A737, every journey coats your car in a salty film. Left on, salt dulls the paint, attacks bare metal and works its way into wheels and underbody parts.
  • Constant wet and dirt. On wet roads, spray from other cars covers the lower doors, sills and rear end in traffic film. It's oily and gritty, and it doesn't rinse off on its own.
  • Washing in a hurry. In winter people tend to wash less often and more quickly, or use a brush car wash. Rubbing salt and grit across the paint is one of the main causes of the swirl marks I polish out every spring.
  • Short days. Less daylight means you often don't notice how dirty the car is until the damage is done.

My Winter Car Care Tips

  1. Rinse more, scrub less. After a salty spell, a rinse with a pressure washer or hose takes most of the salt off without touching the paint. Pay attention to the wheel arches, sills and lower doors.
  2. Pre-wash before you touch the paint. Snow foam or a pre-wash spray loosens grit so less of it gets dragged across the paint when you wash.
  3. Use two buckets and a clean mitt. One bucket for shampoo, one for rinsing the mitt. Never use a sponge or a brush, as they trap grit and scratch the paint.
  4. Avoid brush car washes. They're quick, but in winter the brushes are full of grit from every car before yours.
  5. Clean your wheels separately. Brake dust and salt sit together on wheels and can damage the finish. Use a separate mitt and bucket, and never use the wheel mitt on the paint.
  6. Dry with a proper drying towel. A soft microfibre drying towel avoids the scratches an old chamois or bath towel can leave.
  7. Protect the paint before winter starts. A layer of protection makes every wash easier and stops dirt and salt bonding to the paint. More on that below.

Why a Ceramic Coating Before Winter Makes Sense

A ceramic coating bonds to your paint and creates a hard, slick layer. In winter that makes a real difference:

  • Salt and road grime struggle to stick, so most of it rinses off
  • Washing is quicker, and you touch the paint less, which means fewer swirls
  • The paint is protected from the salty film that dulls unprotected cars

I use Feynlab and Carbon Collective coatings, and every coating starts with a full decontamination and paint prep. The ideal time to book is autumn, before the gritters are out. Find out more about my ceramic coatings.

If your car is already coated, a ceramic coating maintenance detail before winter will clean it properly and top up the protection.

Still Carrying Last Winter's Damage?

If your paint already has swirls, haze or light scratches, coating over them just locks them in. Paint correction removes them first. I offer three levels, from a single-stage paint enhancement to major paint correction, and I'll always recommend the lightest one that does the job.

Winter Detailing Near You

My workshop is at Murray Business Park in Paisley, so I'm close by for drivers across west Renfrewshire.

  • Johnstone: around 10 minutes away. Commuting on the A737 in winter means a lot of salt spray, so a coating pays for itself quickly. Car detailing in Johnstone.
  • Linwood: just a few minutes away and close to the M8, where winter traffic throws up plenty of salt spray. Car detailing in Linwood.
  • Elderslie: sitting between Paisley and Johnstone, it's one of the shortest trips to my workshop.
  • Kilbarchan: the village's narrow streets and surrounding country roads mean plenty of mud and grit through the winter months. A coated car is far easier to keep clean.

I also look after cars from Barrhead, Neilston, Glasgow and further afield. You'll find the full list on my areas covered page.
