Wet Sanding & Deep Scratch Removal in Paisley
Some scratches are too deep for machine polishing alone. When a compound and pad can't level the damage, I wet sand the clear coat by hand to bring it back flat, then fully correct and ceramic coat the paint.
It's the most thorough paint restoration I offer, carried out at my workshop at Murray Business Park, Paisley, with nearly 20 years of detailing behind it.
What is wet sanding?
Wet sanding uses very fine abrasive paper, kept lubricated with water, to level the clear coat down to the bottom of a scratch. Instead of trying to polish a deep mark out, I carefully flatten the surrounding clear so the scratch disappears.
The sanding leaves a uniform haze, which I then refine back to full gloss with machine paint correction. Done properly, the finish is flatter and clearer than it was before the damage.
When machine polishing isn't enough:
- Deep scratches you can catch with a fingernail
- Key marks and deliberate damage that hasn't gone through the paint
- Isolated deep defects that would need too much aggressive machining to remove
- Sanding marks, runs or dust nibs left from bodyshop work
Is your scratch suitable?
Wet sanding works when the scratch is still within the clear coat. If it has gone through to the colour coat or bare metal, no amount of sanding or polishing will remove it, and the panel needs paint repair instead.
That's why every job starts with an inspection. I take paint depth readings across each affected panel and check exactly how deep the damage sits. If there isn't enough clear coat to remove the scratch safely, I'll tell you straight rather than take your money.
I record readings before and after, so you know exactly how much clear coat has been removed and how much remains to protect your paint in future.

What's included
This is a complete package: wet sanding, full paint correction and ceramic coating, all carried out by me.
- Inspection and paint depth readings – every panel measured and the damage assessed under specialist lighting.
- Full decontamination wash – snow foam, safe wash, iron fallout removal and clay to give a perfectly clean surface.
- Wet sanding – deep scratches levelled by hand within the clear coat, with readings checked as I work.
- Multi-stage paint correction – sanding marks refined out, then the whole car corrected to remove swirls and light scratches for an even, high-gloss finish.
- Panel wipe – polishing oils removed so the coating bonds directly to the paint.
- Ceramic coating – applied and cured to lock in the finish, adding gloss, protection and easier cleaning.
- Final inspection and handover – before and after readings shared with you, plus aftercare advice to keep the coating at its best.
Pricing
Wet sanding, paint correction and ceramic coating starts from £1,800.
The final price depends on:
- The size of the vehicle
- How many panels need wet sanding and how deep the damage is
- The overall condition of the paint
- The paint type, as some finishes are harder or softer to work with
I'll confirm an exact price after inspecting the car, so there are no surprises.
Frequently asked questions
Is wet sanding safe for my paint? Yes, when it's done by someone experienced and measured properly. I check paint depth before, during and after, and only remove what's needed to level the scratch.
Can every scratch be removed? No. If a scratch has gone through the clear coat into the colour, it needs paint repair. I'll tell you honestly at the inspection stage.
Why is ceramic coating included? Wet sanding and correction take your clear coat back to its best. The coating protects that finish, so you get the most from the work.
How long will I be without my car? It depends on the size of the car and the amount of damage. I'll give you a timescale when I confirm your booking.
Do I need wet sanding, or will paint correction do? Most swirls and light scratches only need machine correction. Wet sanding is for damage that polishing alone can't reach. Visit my premises and I'll recommend the right option.
