5 Ceramic Coating Myths Glasgow Drivers Should Know Before Booking
Ceramic coating gets marketed hard online, and some of what gets claimed about it isn't quite accurate. Before you book anything — or pay for something more expensive than you actually need — here's what a proper ceramic coating genuinely does, and what it doesn't.
Myth 1: "Ceramic coating makes your car scratch-proof"
It doesn't. A quality ceramic coating cures to a genuinely hard finish and does add real resistance to fine marring from washing — that part's true. But it won't stop a key, a shopping trolley, or a stone chip. Anyone claiming your paint becomes "bulletproof" is overselling it. What it actually protects against well is the slow, cumulative damage from washing, chemical exposure, and UV — not a single sharp impact.
Myth 2: "Once it's coated, you never need to wash your car again"
A ceramic coating makes washing easier and more effective — dirt releases more readily, and the surface stays cleaner for longer between washes. It doesn't mean the car stays clean without any washing at all. Road grime, bird droppings, and general dirt still land on coated paint the same as uncoated paint; the coating just stops them bonding as stubbornly.
Myth 3: "All ceramic coatings are basically the same"
There's a real difference between a genuine multi-year coating and a "ceramic spray" product that lasts a few washes. Some products marketed as ceramic coatings are closer to an enhanced sealant than an actual bonded ceramic layer. Ask specifically what product is being used and how long it's genuinely rated for — a proper coating like Feynlab or Carbon Collective is a very different thing from a spray-on bottle from a supermarket.
Myth 4: "DIY kits give the same result as professional application"
DIY ceramic kits can work reasonably well if applied carefully to properly prepared paint — but that's the part that's usually missing. Professional application includes full decontamination, clay bar treatment, and often paint correction beforehand, done in a controlled environment without dust or humidity interfering with the cure. Applying a coating over paint that isn't properly prepped traps contamination underneath it rather than protecting clean paint, and can leave an uneven, patchy finish that's genuinely difficult to correct afterwards.
Myth 5: "It's a one-time cost with zero maintenance after"
A ceramic coating dramatically reduces maintenance, but it isn't entirely maintenance-free. Regular washing (ideally with pH-neutral products) helps the coating perform as intended for its full lifespan, and coatings do eventually need maintenance or reapplication once they reach the end of their rated protection period — whether that's 2 years or 5. Treating it as "apply once, ignore forever" tends to shorten how long it actually lasts.
So What Should You Actually Expect?
A properly applied, genuine ceramic coating gives you: easier washing, better resistance to chemical staining and UV fading, strong water beading for years rather than weeks, and paint that stays looking better for longer with less effort. That's genuinely valuable — it just isn't the same as some of the more exaggerated marketing around it.
