Getting Your Car Ready for a Glasgow Winter: A Simple Checklist
By the time the first proper cold snap hits, it's already too late to get ahead of it — road salt starts going down, daylight hours shrink, and paintwork that isn't properly protected takes months of quiet damage before spring. Here's a straightforward checklist for getting a car ready before winter actually arrives, rather than reacting to it afterwards.
1. Get a proper decontamination wash done now
Before any protection goes on, paintwork needs to actually be clean at a chemical level — not just visibly clean. Traffic film, brake dust and summer contamination build up over the warmer months, and none of that comes off with a normal wash. Starting winter with genuinely decontaminated paint means whatever protection you apply afterwards can actually do its job properly.
2. Check what protection is already on there, honestly
If you can't remember the last time you applied wax, sealant, or had a ceramic coating done, assume there's little to no protection left. Most consumer waxes are gone within weeks, and even a decent sealant rarely survives a full summer of washing. Going into winter with unprotected paint means road salt and grit sit directly against bare clear coat.
3. Sort any existing marks before you seal them in
Whatever condition your paintwork is in when you protect it is roughly the condition it'll stay in until the next time it's corrected — a ceramic coating protects what's there, it doesn't fix what's already wrong. If you've been meaning to deal with swirl marks or dullness, now is a better time than March, when the damage has had all winter to get worse underneath the coating.
4. Decide between a quick refresh and full protection
Not every car needs the same level of work before winter:
- Reasonably new or already well-maintained → an Exterior Protection Detail gives a straightforward decontamination and up to 12 months of ceramic protection without the cost of a full correction.
- Noticeable marking or it's been a while since anything was done → worth a look at paint correction options first, then protect what's underneath properly.
- Planning to keep the car long-term → a longer-lasting ceramic coating (2 or 5 year options) means one job now covers you through several winters, not just one.
5. Keep washing through winter, even when it's tempting not to
It's the season people wash their cars least and need to wash them most. Salt left sitting on paintwork and in stone chips for weeks does more damage than the cold itself. A quick, proper wash every couple of weeks through winter matters more than an occasional deep clean in spring once the damage is already done.
